# M4 Performance Optimizations

This document outlines the performance optimizations implemented for the M4 creative tools platform.

## Backend Optimizations

### 1. HTTP Response Caching
**Location:** `api/src/common/interceptors/cache.interceptor.ts`

- **What:** Redis-based HTTP response caching for GET requests
- **Why:** Reduce database queries and API response times for frequently accessed data
- **Impact:** 50-90% reduction in response time for cached endpoints
- **Usage:**
  ```typescript
  @Get(':id')
  @CacheResponse(300) // Cache for 5 minutes
  async getTrack(@Param('id') id: string) {
    return this.tracksService.findOne(id);
  }
  ```

### 2. Database Query Optimization

#### Connection Pooling
**Location:** `api/src/data-source.ts`

- Maximum pool size: 20 connections
- Minimum pool size: 5 connections
- Idle timeout: 10 seconds
- Connection timeout: 3 seconds

#### Indexing Strategy
```sql
-- Track queries
CREATE INDEX idx_tracks_owner ON tracks(owner_user_id);
CREATE INDEX idx_tracks_visibility_published ON tracks(visibility, published_at);
CREATE INDEX idx_tracks_slug ON tracks(slug);
-- Version queries
CREATE INDEX idx_versions_track ON track_versions(track_id);
CREATE INDEX idx_versions_status ON track_versions(status);
-- Download queries
CREATE INDEX idx_downloads_track ON downloads(track_id, created_at DESC);
CREATE INDEX idx_downloads_user ON downloads(user_id, created_at DESC);
-- Stem queries
CREATE INDEX idx_stems_version ON stems(track_version_id);
CREATE INDEX idx_stems_role ON stems(role);
-- Transcode queries
CREATE INDEX idx_transcodes_version_format ON transcodes(track_version_id, format);
CREATE INDEX idx_transcodes_status ON transcodes(status);
```

### 3. Eager Loading Relationships

**Before:**
```typescript
const track = await this.trackRepository.findOne({ where: { id } });
const version = await this.versionRepository.findOne({ where: { track_id: id } });
// 2 queries
```

**After:**
```typescript
const track = await this.trackRepository.findOne({
  where: { id },
  relations: ['primary_version', 'primary_version.original_asset'],
});
// 1 query with joins
```

### 4. Pagination for Large Result Sets

**Implemented in:**
- Download history: 100 items per page
- Track listings: 50 items per page
- Stems listing: All (limited to 20 per version)

### 5. Lazy Loading for Heavy Operations

**Transcoding:**
- MP3 transcoding only happens on-demand when first download is requested
- HLS transcoding happens asynchronously after upload
- Waveform generation happens in background

## Frontend Optimizations

### 1. Component Lazy Loading

**Location:** `web/app/track/[slug]/page.tsx`

```typescript
import dynamic from 'next/dynamic';
const StemsPanel = dynamic(() => import('@/components/StemsPanel'), {
  loading: () => <div>Loading stems...</div>,
  ssr: false,
});
```

### 2. Image Optimization

**Implemented:**
- Next.js Image component for artwork
- Responsive image sizes
- WebP format with fallbacks
- Lazy loading for below-fold images

### 3. Audio Streaming Optimization

**HLS Configuration:**
```typescript
{
  maxBufferLength: 30,        // 30 seconds buffer
  maxMaxBufferLength: 120,    // 2 minutes max buffer
  maxBufferSize: 60 * 1000 * 1000, // 60MB
  enableWorker: true,         // Use web worker for demuxing
}
```

### 4. Debouncing & Throttling

**Search input:** 300ms debounce
**Scroll events:** 100ms throttle
**Window resize:** 150ms throttle

### 5. Memoization

**React.memo for:**
- StemItem component
- DownloadHistoryRow component
- WaveformDisplay component

## Worker Process Optimizations

### 1. Job Prioritization

```typescript
{
  'transcode-hls': { priority: 1 },     // Highest priority
  'waveform': { priority: 2 },
  'fingerprint': { priority: 3 },
  'mp3-transcode': { priority: 4 },     // On-demand, lower priority
  'distribution': { priority: 5 },
}
```

### 2. Concurrency Limits

- **Transcode jobs:** Max 2 concurrent (CPU intensive)
- **Waveform jobs:** Max 4 concurrent
- **Upload processing:** Max 8 concurrent

### 3. Job Retry Strategy

```typescript
{
  attempts: 3,
  backoff: {
    type: 'exponential',
    delay: 2000,  // 2s, 4s, 8s
  },
}
```

## Storage Optimizations

### 1. Multipart Upload Chunking

- **Chunk size:** 5MB (optimal for S3)
- **Parallel uploads:** Up to 4 chunks simultaneously
- **Resume capability:** ETag-based part verification

### 2. Presigned URL Caching

- **Stream URLs:** 24-hour expiry, generated once per session
- **Download URLs:** 1-hour expiry
- **Stem URLs:** 1-hour expiry

### 3. CDN Integration (Recommended)

- Serve HLS segments via CloudFront
- Cache waveform images at edge
- Cache artwork at edge

## Database Optimizations

### 1. Prepared Statements

All TypeORM queries use parameterized queries (SQL injection prevention + query plan caching)

### 2. Transaction Batching

**Upload completion:**
```typescript
await this.dataSource.transaction(async (manager) => {
  const asset = await manager.save(Asset, assetData);
  const version = await manager.save(TrackVersion, versionData);
  await manager.update(Track, trackId, { primary_version_id: version.id });
});
// 1 transaction instead of 3 separate queries
```

### 3. Denormalization

- `tracks.primary_version_id` - Avoids join for most common query
- `track_versions.duration_ms` - Cached from asset metadata
- `downloads.ip_hash` - Hashed on insert for privacy + performance

## Monitoring & Profiling

### 1. API Endpoint Metrics

**Track:**
- Response time (p50, p95, p99)
- Cache hit ratio
- Database query count per request
- Error rate

### 2. Database Metrics

**Monitor:**
- Connection pool utilization
- Slow query log (>100ms)
- Index usage statistics
- Table size growth

### 3. Worker Metrics

**Track:**
- Job processing time
- Queue depth
- Failure rate
- Retry count
